Super Visa vs. Tourist Visa for Parents: Which One Should You Apply For?

Parents, kids and grand kids laughing. Super visa and tourist visa

Many Canadians and permanent residents want to bring their parents to visit, but the question remains: should you apply for a Super Visa or a Tourist Visa? While both options allow parents to visit Canada, they come with different requirements, processing times, and benefits. Understanding the key differences will help you make the best choice for your family.

What is a Super Visa?

A Super Visa is a special visa designed for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. It allows multiple entries for up to 10 years, with the ability to stay in Canada for up to 5 years per visit without needing to renew status.

Super Visa Requirements:

  • The applicant must be a parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

  • A letter of invitation from the child or grandchild, including details about financial support and the visit.

  • Proof that the host meets the minimum income requirement (Low Income Cut-Off - LICO).

  • Medical insurance from a Canadian company, covering at least $100,000 for at least one year.

  • A medical examination to ensure the applicant is admissible.

What is a Tourist Visa?

A Tourist Visa (Visitor Visa) allows foreign nationals to visit Canada for leisure, family visits, or business purposes. It can be granted for up to 10 years, but each stay is typically limited to 6 months per visit. Extensions may be requested, but approval is not guaranteed.

Tourist Visa Requirements:

  • Proof of ties to the home country (e.g., job, property, family obligations) to show intent to return.

  • Sufficient funds to cover the trip.

  • A letter of invitation (optional but recommended for parental visits).

  • Travel history and a clean record with immigration authorities.

Which One Should You Choose?

  • Choose a Super Visa if your parents or grandparents plan to stay in Canada for extended periods (more than six months at a time) and you meet the income and insurance requirements.

  • Choose a Tourist Visa if your parents plan short-term visits (up to six months) and don’t want the added cost of medical insurance.

If your goal is to have your parents visit for extended stays without worrying about renewing their status, the Super Visa is the better option. However, if they only plan short visits and you want a simpler, more flexible application, the Tourist Visa may work best.
