International Students Contributes $37.3 Billion to the Canadian Economy

International students are a significant driver of the Canadian economy, contributing billions of dollars annually. A recent analysis by Global Affairs Canada (GAC) showed in 2022 alone, international students injected $37.3 billion into the Canadian economy.

Quantifying the Impact

  • Total Spending: International student spending on tuition, accommodation, and discretionary items reached CDN$37.3 billion.

  • GDP Impact: This spending had a combined direct and indirect impact on Canada's GDP of CDN$30.9 billion. This represents a substantial 1.2% of the nation's overall economic output.

  • Export Comparison: Education exports, driven by international students, represented just over 23% of Canada's total service exports and 1.2% of the country's GDP. This surpasses the export values of several key product categories, such as wood products (CDN$25.7 billion), fertilizers (CDN$17.9 billion), and electrical machinery (CDN$19.2 billion).

  • Job Support: The analysis estimates that international student spending supports an impressive 361,230 jobs across Canada, translating to 246,310 full-time equivalent (FTE) positions.

Growth Trends and Top Source Countries

The economic contribution of international students has surged over the past decade. From 2016 to 2022, student spending more than doubled from CDN$15.5 billion to CDN$37.3 billion, averaging a 16% annual increase.

India has been the primary driver of growth in international student numbers, with a 47% increase leading to 319,130 study permit holders in 2022. Other countries showing significant increases include:

  • Philippines: +112% (32,455 students)

  • Hong Kong: +73% (13,100 students)

  • Nigeria: +60% (21,660 students)

  • Colombia: +54% (12,440 students)

This analysis reaffirms the undeniable value that international students bring to the Canadian economy. Their spending fuels job creation, promotes educational exports, generates tax revenue, and fosters vibrant communities across the country. As Canada continues to attract international students, we can expect this positive impact to grow even stronger, shaping the nation's economic landscape for years to come.
