Am I Too Old to Study in Canada?

We have a secret that may just blow your mind, there is no such thing as being too old to study in Canada!

We often hear from clients: "But I'm not in my 20's or 30's, do I stand a chance?" Age is not a determining factor for a Study Permit application!

A successful application boils down to 3 main things:

  • Proof of ties

  • A strong study plan

  • Proof of funds

Let's break these down a little:

Proof of Ties

Proof of ties is one of the unspoken rules in your Study Permit application! IRCC wants to see that you are leaving behind valuable things and/or valuable family that will warrant you returning to your home country at the end of your Visa. Some great examples of proof of ties include:

Family, Business, employment opportunities, financial assets, and landed assets.

(things that you have, that you would not leave behind!)

Strong Study Plan

It is very important to prove to the officer that you are a genuine student and what your plans would be after your studies in Canada.

Your study plan would address concerns about:

  • Your education & professional background,

  • Your program choice,

  • Why you chose to study in Canada, and

  • how your choice of program benefits you and increases your employability when you return to your home country.

Proof of Funds

You need to show minimum funds that would cover tuition fees plus living expenses. so for example, if you are coming for a program that is $20,000 CAD and your living expenses are $10,000 CAD, you should show a minimum of $30,000 CAD (plus the cost of your transportation to Canada!)

If you are coming for a program that is more than 1 year, the Immigration Officer is going to assess your application to see how you raised those funds for the first year and if you will be able to generate those funds for the remainder of your program.
