The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has invited 2985 candidates on a program-specific draw, targeting candidates in the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) with a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) cut off of 676.
This draw is the first since April 24th and the first draw targeting PNP candidates since category-based selection was introduced in June 2023. In these draws, IRCC invites candidates specifically from one immigration program, instead of opening it up to all Express Entry programs like a general draw.
Here's a quick recap of recent Express Entry draws:
April saw four draws:
A general draw inviting 1,280 candidates on April 10th.
A category-based draw for STEM occupations on April 11th, inviting 4,500 candidates.
Two more draws on April 23rd and 24th - a general draw (2,095) and a French-proficiency based draw (1,400).
What is Express Entry?
The Express Entry provides a pathway to permanent residence for skilled workers in Canada or overseas.
Express Entry manages applications for permanent residence under these federal economic immigration programs:
Provinces and territories can also recruit candidates from Express Entry through their Provincial Nominee Programs to meet local labour market needs.
Types of Express Entry Draws
We have three types of express entry draws with the category-based draws being the newest.
1. General rounds of invitations: In general rounds of invitations, the focus is on inviting top-ranking candidates from the Express Entry pool who are eligible for one of the three Express Entry programs. These programs include
Federal Skilled Worker Program: The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) offers a compelling pathway to permanent residency in Canada for skilled professionals with international experience. This program prioritizes your skills and work experience, streamlining the immigration process for those seeking to establish themselves in the dynamic Canadian workforce.
Federal Skilled Trades Program: The Canadian Government's Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) offers a streamlined immigration path for qualified tradespeople seeking permanent residency in Canada. This program recognizes the valuable skills and experience that skilled trades bring to the Canadian workforce.
Canadian Experience Class: The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) offers a streamlined immigration pathway for skilled professionals who have gained a minimum of three years experience working in Canada and aspire to permanent residency.
2. Provincial Nominations Draws (PNP): These are draws that invite candidates who have received a nomination from a Canadian province or territory. These candidates receive an additional 600 CRS points, significantly boosting their chances of receiving an invitation to apply for permanent residence.
3. Program-specific rounds of invitations: Program-specific rounds of invitations target candidates who are eligible for a specific Express Entry program. For instance, if a round of invitations is specifically designated for the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), only candidates who meet the criteria for the PNP will be invited to apply for permanent residence.
4. Category-based rounds of invitations: Under this approach, categories are established to address a specific labour market or economic need in Canada. The highest-ranking candidates in the Express Entry pool who are eligible for the identified category will be invited to apply for permanent residence.
Category-based selection invitations will focus on the following candidates:
French language proficiency
Healthcare
Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions
Trades, such as carpenters, plumbers, and contractors
Transport
Agriculture and agri-food
