The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, has announced a new temporary measure that expands the study options available to temporary foreign workers in Canada.
Effective immediately, the restriction on the length of study programs that temporary foreign workers can undertake without a study permit have been removed.
By eliminating the previous requirement of obtaining a separate study permit for longer programs, the Canadian government seeks to alleviate barriers faced by foreign workers in accessing educational opportunities to advance their goals and contribute further to the Canadian economy.
Prior to this change, foreign workers were only allowed to pursue study programs of 6 months or less while working. However, individuals who aspired to engage in longer courses, including those aimed at upskilling or validating their foreign credentials, were impeded by the need to acquire a study permit.
Under the newly implemented 3-year temporary measure, foreign workers can now enroll in study programs of any duration, without restrictions, while their work permits remain valid or until the expiration of the policy. This offers them the flexibility to study either full-time or part-time, according to their preferences and work commitments.
It is important to note that this temporary measure specifically applies to individuals who currently possess a valid work permit or have a pending decision on their work permit extension as of June 7, 2023. For those seeking to pursue studies beyond the duration of their work permits, the requirement to obtain a study permit remains in effect.
By allowing them to pursue longer and more comprehensive study programs, the Canadian government aims to empower foreign workers to expand their knowledge base, improve their career prospects, and potentially facilitate their transition to permanent residence in the country.
As the country continues to welcome skilled individuals from around the world, this initiative serves as a testament to Canada's dedication to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all who seek to pursue their dreams and create new opportunities within its borders.
