Immigration Minister Sean Fraser has announced that beginning November 15th, 2022 till December 31st, 2023, International students in Canada who are authorized to work off-campus will be able to work more than 20 hours a week off-campus.
This temporary measure will also extend to those who have already submitted a study permit application as of today.
While students work, they will still be expected to maintain their full-time studies. Reducing your studies to part-time will disqualify studies from working off-campus and it will contravene your study permit requirements. If you plan on working more than 20 hours per week, keep in mind that your studies and work will need to be balanced, you still want to do well in school!
Sean Fraser also announced a new pilot program that will automate the process for Study permit extension applications. Fraser clarified that these applications cannot be automatically refused, only approved.
This pilot will help free up immigration officers' time and allow them to focus on more pressing matters and speed up processing times.
These measures will help address the labour shortages in Canada and provide support for existing and future international students.
