I have summarized the process of applying for permanent residency through the express entry system. This should answer most preliminary questions you have about applying for PR through the express entry system.
What is the express entry System?
Express Entry is used to manage federal economic applications for permanent residence. The Programs include :
the Federal Skilled Worker Program,
the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and
the Canadian Experience Class.
Provinces and territories can also recruit candidates from the Express Entry system through their Provincial Nominee Programs to meet local labour market needs.
What is an express entry profile?
An express entry profile is an online account created by potential candidates interested in immigrating to Canada. This profile contains the following information about the applicant.
Age
skills,
work experience,
language ability,
education, and
other details required to assess applicant.
The information provided creates a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) for each applicant.
How can you create an express entry account?
Express entry account can be created through the citizenship and Immigration website. To create this account, applicatants should have completed and meet the requirement for their english or french language abilities as well as completing an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA).
What is the comprehensive Ranking System?
The Comprehensive Ranking System ranks eligible candidates for immigrating to Canada through Express Entry under the following components:
core human capital factors;
accompanying spouse or common-law partner factors;
skill transferability factors; and
factors relating to a provincial nomination or a qualifying offer of arranged employment.
How are points allocated in the CRS?
There are a total of 1,200 points available under the Comprehensive Ranking System. Below is how the first 600 points are assigned.
For candidates without an accompanying spouse or common-law partner, there are:
a maximum of 500 points available for core human capital factors (age, education, language, work experience and adaptability);
a maximum of 100 points available for skill transferability factors; and
For candidates with an accompanying spouse or common-law partner, there are:
a maximum of 460 points available for core human capital factors of the principal applicant(age, education, language, work experience and adaptability);
a maximum of 40 points for the core human capital factors of the spouse or common-law partner;
a maximum of 100 points available for skill transferability factors;
The additional points, up to a maximum of 600 can be claimed through the following factors if you qualify
What happens after my express account is created and I have my CRS Scores?
Upon creation of the express entry account and your scores have been determined, you will remain in the express entry pool until candidates with your score are invited to apply for PR. There is usually at least one express entry draw every month to select applicants. Your express entry account is valid for one year after which it expires.
Express Entry Draw?
This is a monthly draw completed by Immigrations, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). This draw selects candidates with CRS points that are equal or higher than the cut off point. Based on 2017 stats, lowest CRS point was 413 and average was 438. You can read more here
What happens after an invitation to apply (ITA) for PR?
Upon receiving an invitation to apply for PR, applicants have 90 days to submit all required documents electronically for processing.
How long does it take to become a PR after submission?
Processing time for PR after submission is 6-8months.
